Scripture: Genesis 38:1-3

In Genesis 38:1-3 we are told, “It came to pass at that time that Judah departed from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite whose name was Hirah. And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua, and he married her and went in to her. So she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er.” The Israelites were not supposed to marry the Canaanites. They were absolutely not supposed to do that. That was forbidden. In this passage we read that Judah went against God’s law and picked the wrong woman for a wife. Here Judah had a call, the tribe of Judah was the tribe out of which King David and Christ Himself was to come. So far we have two serious acts of rebellion against God’s law. And the more we research Judah the more the evidence mounts against him. The evidence is stacking up that Judah defied God in major ways again and again. God chose regular people who had major issues to overcome! God did not hide the dysfunction of those He chose! This should cause us to take heart.
