Scripture: Obadiah 1-4, 20-21

Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament and it is also the strongest message of judgment in the Old Covenant. The message was given to the nation of Edom and there was absolutely no escape from the sure judgment. Verse 4 says, “‘Though you ascend as high as the eagle, And though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down,’ says the Lord.” Verses 20-21 says, “And the captives of this host of the children of Israel Shall possess the land of the Canaanites As far as Zarephath. The captives of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad Shall possess the cities of the South. Then saviors shall come to Mount Zion To judge the mountains of Esau, And the kingdom shall be the Lord’s.” Even the enemies of the Israelites would end up in their hands. What was Obadiah’s job? His job was to release the judgment of God on Edom and to declare to them forever that God was going to destroy them because of their treatment of the children of Israel. The prophets had a job of bringing the fear of God and they did it. They did it without compromise and their words came to pass. The eventual fulfillment of God’s Word is how we know it was God speaking through them. Reading the prophets is an interesting proposition when we realize that we may very well be walking through the last days. God is getting us ready for a harvest.
