Scripture: Genesis 19:15-26

In Genesis 19, we see the power of the salvation prayer of Abraham. It worked! The angels honored it. They picked up Lot and his family and set them outside of the city. And the angels could not do anything until Lot’s family arrived there. So, Abraham prayed judicially. God honored it and the angels made sure that his family was ushered to safety. What is interesting about this passage is both the power of Abraham’s intercession, and the response of Lot’s wife. The angels made it clear to them that they were not to look back. Abraham prayed justice and that justice dictated they not look back. So it came to pass, when they had brought the family outside that he said, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.” Abraham’s intercession got his family delivered from the city. But it did not protect his family when they disobeyed direct instructions of the angels. Lot’s wife looked back. And because they had entertained the angels and had a meal where salt was on the table, the covenant of salt was in operation. Leviticus 2:13 declares a covenant of salt exists between God and His people. 2 Chronicles 13:5 states David’s Throne is guaranteed by a covenant of salt! And when Lot’s wife looked back, she was turned into an example of the covenant she broke. She became a pillar of salt. Abraham’s intercession brought justice and judgment for Lot based on the condition of the heart! Can our judicial prayers save our family members? Yes – they can separate them when God has destruction ordained for a city or a region, it can separate them and save them. But our prayers will not save them from their own personal rebellion. And there are things that we need to make plain to our family and that is one of them. We can pray for them and make sure God’s Hand of protection is over them. But we cannot save them from their own personal rebellion. No one can save us from rebellion and no one can save them from it. One of Abraham’s assignments was that he would teach his children and his family after him. There are some things that we have to make clear and obeying God is one of them.
