Scripture: Genesis 18:19-25

A major purpose for God’s covenanting with man was that we might do justice.  The question becomes, how do we do it? Now that presents a problem based on Genesis 18:20.  Verse 20 says, “And the LORD said, ‘Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous, I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.’”  The reason God covenants with us and expects us to do justice is that His creation, in which we live, will only tolerate so much sin.  When the land begins to fill with iniquity, it cries out to the Creator for relief.  And that relief only has one form – the perpetrators have to be judged.  The problem with judging perpetrators is that in God’s vast creation righteous people often live right next to the perpetrators.  Now the problem becomes clear.  How do we bring justice on the perpetrators and at the same time save the righteous?  This is not rocket science and it is pretty clear what Abraham did.  He got in God’s face and demanded covenant justice!  What are we demanding?
